Q&A - Acrylic Blocks

Q & A

Question of the day is from fellow Blogger Post-College Working Girl :
"Where can I purchase acrylic blocks to place underneath lamps?"

Want this look??

Decade, a Vintage furniture & Art shop, here in Charlotte sells them from time to time.  But if you are not here in good ol' CLT then try this website.

They have display cases, beveled acrylic stands, and plain edges stands.  A lot of options here!!

Also this website... Not as much acrylic but still have options.

Perfection

I have found the PERFECT curtains!!! (thanks to fellow blogger Splendid Willow) They are exactly what I was looking for.   Before I show you the curtains let me give you some background on where they will be going...

Here is my dining room as it is right now while I'm having my morning coffee.
(the flooring is wall to wall seagrass)

I have big plans for this room... but the Dining Room is typically the most expensive room to redecorate.  The chairs I love... got a steal on them.  I had them recovered in a brown and white woven fabric and the host and hostess chairs are brown fabric (see below.)  I wish I had gone with white leather... that is what I REALLY wanted but you live and learn.  When they need recovering I will do it then. :)

The lamps on the sideboard are amazing!! Stacked Crystal Cubes via Visual Comfort as is the chandelier.

The two biggest things that drive me nuts are the dining room table and the curtains.  We got the curtains when we moved in as a quick fix.  The table is going to be major $$$ so until I find exactly what I want we are hanging on to the hand me down we have now!

Introducing the curtains.....  From Martha&Ash's Etsy Shop

They are available in 84", 96", and 108" lengths and are 46" wide.  They are lined and they also offer interlining for an upcharge.

A slew of colors to choose from... They are sending me swatches of creamy white, rust, and ginger.  I am pretty sure I'm going to go with creamy white and ginger (to match the seagrass.)

Aren't they Great?!?!? Perfect way to add some pizzaz!!

Design Q & A

A friend asked me a design question yesterday giving me a thought.... Why not start a design Q & A right here on Boddrick's Roost???
Please send in any design questions or unsolved design dilemmas you may have and I will do my best to answer!  Pictures Welcomed! You can email me at boddricksroost@gmail.com

QUESTION:
The question I received yesterday was, "Do the lamps in your bedroom need to be taller than your headboard?"

ANSWER:
There are so many different aspects to take into consideration...
Do you have an extremely tall headboard?
What is your focal point above your bed?  A series of art, a window, or a sunburst mirror maybe??

As long as the lamps are proportionate to the headboard and what is above the bed (if anything) then you are good.  What you don't want is an enormous canopy bed paired with tiny squatty lamps or vice versa.  It just won't look right.  Trust your eye... if you think your lamps look squatty try stacking coffee table books underneath them or find a Lucite block to place underneath something to add height.  And if you think your lamps are tall find a cool piece of vertical art or a vertical mirror to anchor them.

Below are some inspiration pictures with lamps being taller and smaller than the headboard and one picture even has pendants hanging instead of lamps at all.
A million ways to go....

Christmas in July

This is my first year blogging so you are still getting to know me.  One thing you must know is how much I love Christmas!!  I love the carols, tree, friends and family getting together... It's such a wonderful time to cherish the things that mean the most to you.

You may be wondering why I chose this day to write about Christmas... July 25, 2011.  CHRISTMAS IN JULY!!!

Below are some pics of our decorations from past years.

As with any good marriage you have compromise.  I grew up with our Christmas Tree decorated with white lights and my husband grew up with big C7 colored lights.  Neither of us were willing to give up our tradition so we compromised and now decorate with both. It looks great, I must say!

We rarely have a white Christmas here in NC but last year we had about 8 inches on Christmas Day.  A white Christmas... you gotta love it!

Curtains

I am so over the curtains in my dining room!!! I got them as a quick fix when we bought our house and they have now served their purpose.   They are red with a burnt orange pattern running through them.  Way too much red going on in my house and I'm ready to tone it down.

What I'm LOVING are horizontal strip curtains!! I want a white or cream background with a stripe to match our sea grass rug.  Wouldn't that be great???  I'm on the search for ready made curtains with no success.   I think this is going to be a custom job...

Monday Morning

What a wonderful weekend I had...  Got to visit with old friends, visit with my aunt, uncle, and cousin (who had just returned from Camp Cheerio) and then had a wonderful dinner with my mom and dad.  Lovely evening!

I also attended a Sip and See for a dear friend... A Sip and See is an opportunity to meet a new baby and the hostess serves light appetizers and beverages.  I got to see lots of old friends.  I received the nicest compliment about Boddrick's Roost from an old friend.  She had been on a girls weekend with a few of our other friends (who I haven't seen in a long time either) and she told me that they were talking about Boddrick's Roost and that they checked it out regularly!!!  I was so thankful and excited!! Thank you girls for checking it out and I hope to see you all VERY soon!!!!

My Mom and I also went thrifting and found some great stuff.  Not exactly the inspiration pictures I posted on Saturday but I found a few unusual things.

Cool Bike, Huh??? Have I ever posted a picture of my bike?? I don' think so... My husband gave it to me a few years ago for Christmas... and it's John Deere with a yellow leather seat. It's pretty cool but so is this one! Love the basket in the back.

This was probably the steal of the day... I found a Hartmann Train Suitcase in near perfect condition.  What a great vintage piece to travel with.  I picture my grandmother on the train in her white traveling gloves and a cute hat carrying this tote...

One thing I have learned about thrifting from this weekend is that you have to make an effort and go every chance you get.  You never know what's out there but you have to check it out constantly.

Sandhill Cottage via Elle Decor

I was with an old friend over the 4th of July who has just bought her first house and is in the process of decorating.  (She has great taste!)  Our conversation quickly turned to paint colors and how hard it is to pick paint colors.  (For me gray is nearly impossible to perfect.)  What I noticed from our conversation is that we are both drawn to white walls throughout a home with pops of color introduced using pillows, accessories, etc.

When I saw this article on Elle Decor's website I fell in love! This is exactly what I want my house to look like!!! Perfection.
